Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) behaviour in the presence of whale-watching vessels

چکیده

Beluga whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) are social animals that return to the same estuaries each summer season. The Western Hudson Bay belugas in Churchill River estuary appear be attracted boats, resulting whale-watching being a popular tourism activity for area. However, regulators have raised concerns about whether this has negative consequences on beluga population. We hypothesized more vulnerable groups, such as groups containing calves, would avoid vessels, while juvenile who developed curiosity, likely interact with vessels. To test these hypotheses, behavioural observations were conducted 2019, 2020, and 2021, using similar methodology study 2005 2006. An increase since initial offered unique opportunity compare potential change over time. In study, group of was randomly selected; type, behaviour distance vessel, observed vessel during three-minute focal follows recorded. method also applied from shore we compared frequencies whale experimental (vessels present) control greater than 300m away) periods. Results showed there significant difference mean size presence vessels those absence There well between age class their During spent 63% time interacting when within 25 m an 48% previous 15 years previous. Our results overall differed settings but suggest belugas’ reactions not necessarily deleterious them, direct interactions wildlife low unlikely carry risk, they may habituated last two decades.

The Genome of the Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)

The beluga whale is a cetacean that inhabits arctic and subarctic regions, and is the only living member of the genus Delphinapterus. The genome of the beluga whale was determined using DNA sequencing approaches that employed both microfluidic partitioning library and non-partitioned library construction. The former allowed for the construction of a highly contiguous assembly with a scaffold N5...

Environmental Adaptations of the Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)

This paper aims to analyze the physiological, perceptual, and behavioral adaptations in the Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas) as a result of its arctic niche. The social implications of these adaptations will be examined by looking at each part as influential elements of each other. Lastly, the idea of defining culture in cetaceans will be addressed, including a proposal for examining cultur...

BELUGA WHALE, Delphinapterus leucas: Cook Inlet Population - Critically Endangered

Population Identity: Based on studies of mitochondrial DNA, Cook Inlet belugas are genetically distinct from the other four beluga populations that occur in western and northern Alaska (O’Corry-Crowe et al. 1997; O’Corry-Crowe, pers. comm.). There have been only two beluga sightings recorded in the region between Cook Inlet and the nearest beluga population in Bristol Bay (Frost and Lowry 1990;...

Relative quantity judgments in the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Numerous studies have documented the ability of many species to make relative quantity judgments using an analogue magnitude system. We investigated whether one beluga whale, Delphinapterus leucas, and three bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, were capable of selecting the larger of two sets of quantities, and analyzed if their performance matched predictions from the object file model ver...

Renal cellular and tissue specializations in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas)

In this report selected examples of subcellular specializations and tissue structures of the bottlenose dolphin and beluga whale kidney are presented which illustrate some unique renal adaptations of cetaceans, and other subcellular structures are depicted for here the first time by electron microscopy. Large reservoirs of glycogen in the cortical proximal convoluted tubules, some unique bundle...
